Phoenix is a city that shouldn’t even exist. Spread out across more than 14 thousand (!!!) square miles of desert in central arizona, it’s just massive, dry, criss-crossed with highways and utterly soulless. When i was growing up i called it “the wasteland”. And i yearned to get out of there. Maybe other kids grew up wanting to go to harvard for med school, or move to la to be famous. I just wanted to go somewhere with trees. Like real trees. Not cacti. Not oversized bushes. I wanted to sit in the shade, in a place where not every plant was pointy, and where nature as a whole wasn’t actively trying to kill me.
